Oxford Molecular Pathology Institute, University of Oxford

Architect - Nightingale Associates

Main Contractor - Mace Plus

Value - £1.6m

Description - Designed in collaboration with Make Architects, the purpose of this new building is to provide the adjoining Sir William Dunn School of Pathology with state of the art, flexible laboratory spaces and computer services facilities.

A brise soleil constructed from horizontal terracotta baguettes forms a striking design feature. Designed by Red and hung onto extruded brackets fixed back through the unitised system, these baguettes shade the glazed northern and southern facades against solar gain. Vertical standing fins integrated into the system along the northern side shield the interior against morning and evening low angle sunlight.

The façade system chosen for the building was the structurally glazed version of Schuco's SU90, which has no external glazing beads. 20% of the facility's energy needs will be met by on-site renewables including a CHP plant, a borehole groundsource heat pump, solar water heating and an absorption cooling process that uses heat generated by the computers to cool the building.

Active Learning Laboratory, University of Liverpool

Architect - Sheppard Robson

Main Contractor - BAM Construction

Value - £3.2m

Description - This innovative two-storey 'Active Learning Lab' is the striking centrepiece to the redevelopment of the university's Department of Engineering. The scheme provides the department with up-to-date facilities through the refurbishment of four existing buildings and the creation of a new entrance foyer and courtyard.

The laboratory, based on the principles of CDIO – Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate is designed to accommodate the whole engineering process from initial design through to assembly and testing in a single facility. It has been developed as a glass faced cube, floating above the existing podium.

Red Architectural played a crucial role in realising the architect's vision through the installation of a bespoke frameless glass rainscreen cladding system, spaced off the outside face of the external wall. Elsewhere, the project also made extensive use of Red's roofing skills and included the construction of a new glazed circulation area utilising Schüco's FW 60+ façade system.

New Line Learning Academy, Maidstone, Kent

Architect - Jestico + Whiles

Main Contractor - Carillion Building plc

Value - £1.6m

Description - Specialising in Business, Enterprise and Vocational Studies, the Academy is part of New Line Learning Trust Federation of Academies. It is the first school to implement the Learning Plazas concept which aims to provide inspiration for children to learn through the use of innovative design. The large volume teaching blocks are designed as double height spaces to promote natural light and ventilation and offices have been deliberately located on the mezzanine levels to provide a more intimate environment for learning.

The school has been designed to have minimal impact on surrounding areas and its siting means that it is screened from nearby residential properties. The Academy's envelope installed by Red Architectural, consists of a Schüco FW 60+ curtain walling system with coloured infill panels which create random patterns reminiscent of those encountered in natural mature foliage. In addition, Red Architectural installed AWS 65 windows and matching ADS 65 HD doors, rooflights and Renson Sunclip Brise Soleils. The Academy was the Winner of the Excellence in BSF Award.
